A One Day Introductory Tour

College of General Studies, University of Pennsylvania
Room 421, Williams Hall - November 10, 2001, 9:30-4:30

Remember the modem user.

Fact: Almost 70% of internet users do not have broadband access. [show me]

Fact: Only 15% of internet users have broadband access at home. [show me]

Fact: During peak hours, the "broad" in cable-modem broadband can be slower than a dialup [been there, done that]

Fact: among the nonprofits in the Philanthropy 400, less than 1% of total giving in the year 2000 came from online giving [show me]

Rumor: One consultant reports that his clients' online giving comes overwhelmingly from people using broadband at work.

Opinion: going through many nonprofit websites on a modem connection is like swimming upstream through molasses.

Try it yourself on the websites of the top 25 nonprofits from the Philanthropy 400.

Conclusion: although broadband is making strong gains, for most of your audience it's a modem world. Yet, many sites are designed, and approved, by people who view them on broadband. Make sure yours isn't one of them.
